Sleep Onset Protocols
Forcing parasympathetic dominance to reduce sleep latency.
The Physiology of Sleep Onset
To transition into Stage 1 sleep, heart rate must drop and core body temperature must decrease. Extended exhalations directly stimulate the vagus nerve (via Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia), forcefully applying the "vagal brake" to the heart.
Protocol 1: 4-7-8 Breathing (Dr. Andrew Weil)
- Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound.
- Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of 4.
- Hold your breath for a count of 7.
- Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound to a count of 8.
- Repeat the cycle four times.
Protocol 2: Extended Exhale (1:2 Ratio)
A simpler, safer approach if holds cause anxiety.
- Inhale strictly through the nose for 4 seconds.
- Exhale slowly through the nose (or pursed lips) for 8 seconds.
- Repeat for 5-10 minutes.
Common Mistakes
Using chest/apical breathing. If your shoulders move up, you are signaling stress. Ensure the movement is entirely in the lateral ribs and belly.
FAQ
Q: Why do I feel panicky holding for 7 seconds?
A: You have low CO2 tolerance (low BOLT score). Do not force the hold. Switch to Protocol 2.
