NO Accumulation TimerWhat is Nitric Oxide?
Nitric Oxide (NO) is a potent vasodilator and bronchodilator produced in the paranasal sinuses. It was named "Molecule of the Year" in 1992 for its critical role in cardiovascular health.
The Mechanism
When you breathe through your nose, air sweeps NO from the sinuses down into the lungs. Upon reaching the alveoli, NO instantly dilates the pulmonary blood vessels, allowing for vastly superior gas exchange.
| Pathway | NO Present? | Resulting Oxygen Uptake |
|---|---|---|
| Mouth Breathing | No (Bypasses sinuses) | Baseline (Inefficient) |
| Nasal Breathing | Yes | +10% to +20% improvement |
Humming and NO
A 2002 study in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine demonstrated that humming increases nasal NO release by up to 15-fold compared to quiet exhalation.
This is the physiological basis for Om chanting and Bhramari Pranayama.
Common Mistakes
Mouth breathing during sleep. It completely bypasses NO production, leading to dry mouth, poor oxygenation, and increased sympathetic stress.
FAQ
Q: Does mouth taping at night work?
A: Yes. It forces nasal NO pooling and utilization. Always consult a physician if you have severe obstructive sleep apnea before taping.
